Now, I’m liberal, but to a degree
I want ev’rybody to be free
But if you think that I’ll let Barry Goldwater
Move in next door and marry my daughter
You must think I’m crazy!
I wouldn’t let him do it for all the farms in Cuba.
6 Devotion to the music did not cease. As late as December of 2009, Dylan was performing Guthrie’s ‘Do Re Me’ with Ry Cooder and Van Dyke Parks during The People Speak, an all-star documentary — Matt Damon, Springsteen, Morgan Freeman — inspired by Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States (1980).
7 The quotations in both cases derive from Klaus Völker’s Brecht: A Biography (1976), Ch. 28.
8 A Freewheelin’ Time, pp. 234—5.
9 From Part 2, Ch. 3 of And a Voice to Sing With (1987), the second autobiography, no less, by Baez.

12 Forty-three-year-old Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the ‘White Citizens’ Council’ and subsequently of the Klan, was first arrested in June of 1964. Two trials in that year failed to reach a verdict, but he was convicted finally in 1994. Beckwith died in prison in 2001.
13 This, as with much of the Greenwood narrative, is derived from crmvet.org, the website of the Civil Rights Movement Veterans. Its article on events in Leflore County in 1963 makes no mention, incidentally, of the efforts of any folk singer.

18 ‘Barbara Allen’, a song as old as most hills, not least those of the Scottish Borders, where the surname is common, would surface finally on Dylan’s Live at the Gaslight 1962. The album was released in 2005, initially in a distribution deal with Starbucks. A new sort of coffee house for a new age, then. ‘A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall’ with your crème brûlée macchiato.
19 Though printed on the cover, this was the magazine’s ‘pull date’, the date at which it was to be removed from the news-stands. Dylan must therefore have had sight of the story a week before 4 November, probably on or around 29 October, when Shelton was writing his letter of complaint to Svedberg’s editor.
20 Dylan was deeply, pathologically reluctant to part with this fiction. Close to a year later, in the edition of 24 October 1964, he was still telling The New Yorker that ‘I kept running because I wasn’t free’. Newsweek hadn’t cured him: ‘When I was 13, I was travelling with a carnival through upper Minnesota and North and South Dakota …’ Only by 2005, and Scorsese’s No Direction Home, did he put an obvious fact on the record. He had seen carnivals.
21 In 2005, Columbia issued a promotional six-track version of In Concert entitled Live at Carnegie Hall 1963 to publicise Scorsese’s No Direction Home. Two further songs appeared on the film’s ‘soundtrack’ album, another pair having appeared on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1—3.
